Israeli troops kill Palestinian youth in West Bank

A Palestinian youth was killed by Israeli soldiers and another seriously injured Saturday in clashes in the occupied West Bank, said some Palestinian hospital officials.

The young man took part in demonstrations as protesters threw stones at Israeli soldiers near the city of Nablus in the West Bank. Some Palestinian hospital officials and witnesses said the young 16-year-old Palestinian was killed by Israeli gunfire.

The Israeli military said soldiers fired no ammunition, but use the weapons for riot control such as tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the Palestinians who approached a Jewish settlement.

Death is the first in a series of clashes that erupted this week as a protest against Israel at a concentration of ancient synagogue in the Old City of Jerusalem, and probably will increase the tension.

Islamic groups Hamas and Palestinian officials affiliated with a rival, the moderate Fatah movement, declared the restoration work at the ancient synagogue in the area of Jewish Hurva near the walled Old City of endangering the al-Aqsa Mosque, which is about 400 meters.
